As the end of the summer drew near and the start of the college school year approached, one of my friends from San Diego—Yvonne Karlin, former love song disc jockey at KYXY—sent me an email and asked me to reach out to another young man who was making the move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film.
I obliged, emailing the young man named Brooks Fairley, and received nothing in response. I promptly wrote him off and told Yvonne that the next move was his. I did not have time to play around with people that couldn't get back to me in a timely manner.
Several months went by and I practically forgot about the request, except when I would talk to Yvonne and she would ask if he ever got in touch with me.
Then last night happened.
Another friend of mine, Jenni, goes to the LA Film School in Hollywood. She recently began dating a guy in another state and he was in town for one night only and she had arranged a small get-together. I had logged onto Facebook earlier that evening and viewed the event's invite list and saw Brooks' name under one of the lists and thought it funny that Jenni was a friend of this guy, but I didn't think much more of it until I arrived.
Coming in after everyone else, due to another commitment, I did a quick round of handshakes and sat down. The young man next to me stretched out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Brooks."
"Fairley?" I immediately inquired, with one eyebrow cocked upwards.
There was a momentary pause of stunned silence before he reluctantly responded, "...yes..."
"You owe me an email," I jokingly said harshly as he looked at me with a puzzled, bewildered look on his face. After a beat, I continued, "I'm Aaron Kaiser. Yvonne Karlin referred you to me."
Brooks' eyes lit up as he realized who I was and acknowledged that he did, indeed, owe me an email.
The following picture was sent to Yvonne to let her know that we finally connected:
